It has been my great pleasure working with the trainers at East Bay Strength and Conditioning these past 8 months. My journey into improved health and fitness began with a visit to EBSC where I met with Andrew, the owner of the facility. He helped pave the way for me to challenge my thought processes of what I really hoped to gain by joining the gym and to understand the reasons for wanting to lose wt and get fit especially as I get older. I realized that I also wanted to reduce the chronic pain from sciatica and arthritis.
Working out at the EBSC not only aided me in changing behavior, but to shape a new mindset. I had realized that as someone who is identifies as a caretaker, I wasn’t doing a very good job at caring for myself. I needed to prioritize things including my own health- physically and mentally. I had worked out at gyms in the past, but never really understood the importance of tailoring exercises based upon individual strengths, weaknesses or changes in the body as we age. That’s why having a trainer like Nick has been an amazing experience! Not only does he have the expertise in personal training but also truly understands the fundamentals of muscle kinesiology, healthy eating and the power of positive thinking. Exercises are tailored or modified so that I can progress at my own pace without causing injury.
What also stands out for me as a mature (code for middle-aged) woman, is that at EBSC I never felt uncomfortable working out with the other people, even when I starting close to 65 pounds heavier and more than 16% higher body fat. The atmosphere is consistently positive, jovial and very supportive.
Thank you East Bay Strength and Conditioning!
As a firefighter, my job is physically demanding. Many of the physical tasks we perform cause us to move in unconventional ways which make us more prone to injury. Prior to training with Andrew, my workout routine gave me the strength I needed to perform these tasks with more ease, but never any efficiency or mobility. I'd still strain muscles and was never any less prone to injuries. Since I began training with Andrew, I have made gains in strength, but more importantly, in my mobility and functionality. I am able to perform the physically demanding tasks of my job with far more ease, efficiency, functionality, and intelligence than ever before in my eight years on the job. The strains, soreness, and injuries I was prone to on occasion no longer occur since beginning my training, and the chronic lower backpain I suffered for years prior is now non-existent. A training regiment from EBSC is a vital component to any firefighters health and well being, both on and off the job.
EBSC has become an important part of my routine since I started working with Andrew and his staff almost 5 months ago. When I arrived, I was in particularly bad shape. I had suffered from upper back pain and weakness for about 5 years. Despite making a good effort at consistently exercising, my symptoms only improved modestly. Last summer, I found out that I had osteoporosis in my spine. A trial of medication triggered severe muscle cramps and weakness. In the aftermath of this, I arrived at ESBC at the urging of a friend. Andrew used his considerable powers of analysis to figure out an individualized plan for me. The approach has always been gentle. I've had the normal aches from exercising but have never injured myself. My strength and balance have improved tremendously. For the first time in five years, I can do housework, yard work, or take a long walk without the feeling that my back is ready to collapse. The atmosphere at the gym is always friendly, and laugher is interspersed with the hard work! I can highly recommend the program for any middle-aged person who feels they aren't thriving the way they should.
When I started training at EBSC almost 4 years ago, my goal was to reduce my weight and body fat and achieve overall better fitness. My primary motivation was to improve my tennis game. At the time, I never would have predicted how my soon-to-be elevated strength, agility, and conditioning would also give me the confidence to attempt and power to complete tasks that I formerly would have deferred to my husband or a hired handyman. I am healthier. I play better tennis. I am more helpful.
It makes me happy to say that over the last few weeks, I have wielded a sledge hammer to demolish 40 feet of substantial fencing, used a shovel to dig out eight fence posts - each buried 24" underground, used a hammer to remove over 200 nails, combined all the fence materials into "trash acceptable" size and carried all 12 bundles to the curb. It was empowering and fun. My husband was astonished at what I had achieved all by myself. And so was I.
Just for fun on a recent rainy day, I decided to patch and paint a section of our living room wall that was damaged several years ago. I just had to move a 200 pound cast iron radiator out of the way. No problem!
As high school tennis player, I came to EBSC to get ready for the tennis season and to recover from some chronic injuries - which included a back injury called Spondylolysis, and Plantar Fasciitis in my feet. I started with EBSC and noticed as I was recovering from my back injury that I was instructed to do the same exercises at physical therapy that EBSC was having me do. The trainers at EBSC were very mindful of the level of stress my body could tolerate and tailored personal exercises for me that would help alleviate my pain and strengthen my body enough so that it could perform the motions I needed to perform to excel at my sport. I also was educated in the muscular involvement of other body parts as I performed these athletic motions. I spent time talking to the trainers about nutrition and sleep habits, so that my body could perform at a high level and recovery properly. I gained 15 lbs of muscle while maintaining a low level of body fat. I have found that EBSC has created an environment conducive to elevating my exercise habits, and doing so in an enjoyable, productive and fun way.
